Beaupre Goes the Distance as Hens Continue Run in CAA Tournament

Box Score

WILMINGTON, NC -- The University of Delaware baseball team continued its run in the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Tournament Thursday as the Blue Hens overcame an early 3-0 deficit and rallied for a 7-3 win over William & Mary at UNC Wilmington's Brooks Field.

Delaware senior Jarame Beaupre (right) settled down after a rough start and went the distance, picking up his second complete game of the season as he scattered nine hits and struck out five batters to improve to 7-2 on the season. The complete game was just the fourth thrown by a Blue Hen pitcher this season and was Beaupre's first since March 17 when he tossed a no-hitter in a 13-0 win over Hartford.

The No. 6 seed Blue Hens (32-22) won their fourth straight game and earned a spot in the winner's bracket Friday at 3:30 p.m. against host and No. 2 seed UNC Wilmington, which downed Virginia Commonwealth 12-3 in Thursday night's late game. William & Mary, the tournament No. 4 seed, was eliminated and fell to 37-20 on the season. The Tribe had swept the Blue Hens in their three-game series March 26-28 in Williamsburg, VA.

Blue Hen sophomore shortstop Todd Davison and junior right fielder Dave Harden each knocked in two runs for Delaware, which pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon and scored three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to overtake the Tribe and move on to the win.

Davison, first baseman Steve Van Note, catcher Brian Valichka, and second baseman Brock Donovan all collected two hits with Valichka, the Hens' lone first team All-CAA selection, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

William & Mary, which banged out nine hits but left 11 runners on base, jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings off Beaupre. The Tribe scored twice in the second inning behind an RBI single from shortstop Kyle Padgett and a run-scoring double by left fielder Jon Rymes. The lead increased to 3-0 when center fielder Terry Revere added an RBI single in the third frame.

But Beaupre settled down and the Delaware bats started to heat up after William & Mary starter Forrest Cory (8-3) had retired the first eight Blue Hen batters. Delaware struck for three runs in the fourth inning to tie the score as Davison and Van Note led off with singles and scored on a two-run single to centerfield by Harden. After Kelly Buber walked, Valichka delivered an RBI double to score Harden.

The Hens added three more runs off Cory in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Valichka hit a one-out single up the middle and later scored after Bryan Hagerich walked and William & Mary second baseman Will Rhymes had a throwing error. Donovan followed with a single to chase Cory and bring in William & Mary's All-CAA reliever Bill Bray. Bray walked Ryan Graham and Davison followed with a two-run single to right center to break open the game. Delaware added another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Hagerich.

The Blue Hens, playing in the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2002, are looking to capture their first conference title since winning the America East crown and advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2001. Delaware has won 27 conference regular season and tournament titles all-time.
