February 13, 2004 Harden Belts Two
Home Runs in Loss
Senior co-captain Mike Mihalik (0-1) took the loss for Delaware, allowing five hits and seven runs (six earned) while striking out four in three innings of work. Steve Carter picked up the win for the Chanticleers, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in five innings of work, striking out three. Juniors Ryan Graham and Brock Donovan each added two hits for the Hens (0-1), who have now dropped their season opener at Coastal Carolina three of the past four seasons. Coastal Carolina (3-0) blew the game open with five runs in the third inning. Leading 1-0 entering the bottom half of the frame, sophomore Mike Costanzo doubled home junior Brett Grandstrand and senior Ryan McGraw to up the lead to 3-0. Senior Chad Oxendine singled home Costanzo later in the inning to make it 4-0 in favor of the Chanticleers before senior Greg Orsimarsi scored on a double by sophomore Michael DeJesus. Mihalik then walked junior Chris Todd with the bases loaded to force in another run and give Coastal Carolina 6-0 lead. Van Note and Harden both homered in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-2, but Coastal Carolina pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-2 lead. The Hens answered back with two more runs in the top of the fifth as Donovan singled home sophomore Brent Rogers and Graham scored on an fielding error to cut the lead to 7-4. The Chanticleers answered back with two in the bottom of the inning, making it 9-4, before the Hens put up a two spot for the third consecutive inning in the top of the sixth. Harden scored on a groundout by junior Kelly Buber followed by a sacrifice by Rogers to score sophomore Jason Valichka, cutting the Coastal Carolina lead to 9-6. Delaware could muster but one more run on Harden's second round tripper of the game in the eighth as the Chanticleers pushed across single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to help seal the win. Game two of the three-game series is slated to start tomorrow at 1 p.m. with junior Scott Rambo (0-0) scheduled to start for Delaware against Jake Hurry (1-0) for Coastal Carolina. Box score

yard for the University of Delaware but it wasn't enough as
it fell to Coastal Carolina in baseball action Friday
afternoon, 12-7, in the season opener for the Blue Hens at
Charles Watson Stadium in South Carolina.
