Delaware 6, Delaware State 5 March 5, 2004 Blue Hens Rally From 5-1 Deficit to Win it in the Ninth Box score NEWARK, DE - Junior Ed McDonnell singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the University of Delaware baseball team rallied from a 5-4 ninth-inning deficit to down Delaware State, 6-5, Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. With one out and sophomore Todd Davison on second and senior Steve Van Note on first in the ninth, junior Dave Harden (right) singled underneath Hornets shortstop Kelly Williams, scoring Davison to tie the game at five. That hit brought McDonnell, who had just two hits in his first 13 at bats this season, to the plate with runners on first and third. He ripped a pitch from Hornets reliever Nick Bitter down the left field line to score Van Note and give Delaware its fourth-straight win. Delaware State (8-5) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a three-run home run by second baseman Kevin Hill in the second and a sacrifice fly by left fielder CJ Acker in the fourth. Harden doubled home junior Ryan Graham in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Delaware deficit to 4-1, but a solo home run by DSU catcher Justin Wenger in the top of the sixth put the Hornets up 5-1. Harden, who finished the afternoon 4 for 5, belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to one run, setting up McDonnel's ninth-inning heroics. Harden's home run was his sixth of the season and third in the past two games. Additionally, sophomore Brent Rogers went 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Blue Hens while Wenger went 3 for 4 and Hill 2 for 3 for Delaware State. Freshman Mitch Heckert picked up the win in relief for the Hens, tossing three scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season. Bitter took the loss for Delaware State (8-5), allowing two earned runs in 1.1 innings of work. Delaware State starting pitcher Shawn Phillips tossed seven innings, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out 10. Senior Mike Mihalik started for the Blue Hens, working six innings while allowing six hits and four earned runs, striking out six.
