Runs Not Enough as Pirates Rally for Fifth-Straight
Win GREENVILLE, NC -- Steve Van Note and Bryan Hagerich each homered, but it wasn't enough as University of Delaware lost an early lead and dropped a 6-4 decision to East Carolina in baseball action Friday afternoon. Delaware got on the board quickly with three runs in the top of the first. Ryan Graham singled on the first pitch of the game and moved to third when Todd Davison followed with a double to left center. Van Note then followed with a three-run home run to center field, his second of the season and his 21th as a Blue Hen, to give Delaware a 3-0 lead. East Carolina (5-0) got one run back in the bottom half of the first on an RBI single by Darryl Lawhorn. Delaware (0-2) extended its lead to 4-1 in the fourth on a solo home run by Hagerich, his first of the season. However, that would be the last run of the day allowed by Pirate pitchers. The Pirates scored once in the bottom of the fourth and then tied the game in the fifth on a two-run double by Ryan Norwood, which scored Jamie Paige, who had led of the inning with a double, and Lawhorn, who had walked. East Carolina took the lead for good in the sixth without the benefit of a hit off of sophomore left-hander Joe Coudon, who came on in relief of starter Mike Mihalik for Delaware. John Poppert reached base on an error to open the inning. After being bunted over to second, Poppert moved up to third base on a wild pitch by Coudon. Coudon struck out Billy Richardson for the second out of the inning, but then uncorked another wild pitch on a 3-2 count to Paige, which scored Poppert and gave the Pirates their first lead of the afternoon, 5-4. The Pirates tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with an unearned run and reliever Mike Flye held the Blue Hens at bey the rest of the afternoon. Flye retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, three by strikeout, over three innings to earn his first save of the year. Brody Taylor (1-0) picked up the win for East Carolina.
