East Carolina 4, Delaware 0 February 21, 2004 Blue Hens Held to Just Three Hits in Setback to Pirates Boxscore GREENVILLE, NC -- Starter Greg Bunn and reliever Dustin Sasser held the University of Delaware offense in check and the Blue Hens committed five errors in the field on the way to a 4-0 loss to host East Carolina in non-league baseball action Saturday afternoon. East Carolina, which has received votes in the USA Today Top 25 poll this season, improved to 6-0 this season as the Pirates belted two home runs and scored three runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. Delaware, which managed just three hits on the day and went down in order in six of the first seven innings, fell to 0-3 on the season. The Blue Hens were shutout for the first time since an 8-0 setback to Penn State last March 23, a span of 38 games. Delaware and East Carolina will square off in the third and final game of the three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m. Bunn (2-0) pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits, striking out eight and not allowing a walk. Sasser came in to get the save as he allowed just one hit and struck out three in two innings of work. Delaware starter Scott Rambo (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed five hits and four runs, just one earned, and struck out four in five innings of work. The Blue Hens had their best chance to score in the second inning when Brock Donovan singled with one out and advanced to second on another hit by Ed McDonnell. But Bunn got Dan Kozek to fly out to centerfield and Brian Valichka to ground out to shortstop to end the inning. Valichka collected the Hens' only other hit with a two-out single in the eighth inning. East Carolina got the only run it needed in the third inning when centerfielder Ryan Jones led off the inning with a home run to right field. The Pirates added on three more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a three-run home run by second baseman Trevor Lawhorn. Delaware will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 28, for its home opener when the Hens take on Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader at 12 noon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
