East Carolina 9, Delaware 1 February 22, 2004 Pirates Complete Weekend Sweep Over Blue Hens Boxscore GREENVILLE, NC -- Second baseman Trevor Lawhorn belted a two-run home run in the first inning and keyed a five-run second inning with a two-run double to lead host East Carolina University to a weekend sweep over the University of Delaware with a 9-1 non-league baseball victory Sunday afternoon. The Pirates, who downed the Hens 6-4 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday, collected 10 hits against the Hens Sunday and remained unbeaten on the season with a 7-0 record. Lawhorn also added another double and finished the day going 3 for 5 with four runs batted in. Designated hitter Drew Costanzo and Jake Smith also knocked in two runs apiece. Delaware (0-4), which collected just three hits in Saturday's loss, managed just four hits on Sunday in suffering the loss. The Blue Hens scored their only run in the seventh inning when Bryan Hagerich drew a bases loaded walk. Todd Davison, Steve Van Note, Hagerich, and Brent Rogers each had one hit for the Hens, who were also hurt by three errors. Ricky Brooks (1-0) picked up the win on the mound, allowing just one hit over five innings and striking out four. Three ECU relievers closed the deal for the Pirates, allowing three hits over four innings. Delaware starter Chris Garrick (0-1) suffered the loss in his first outing of the season, allowing six hits and seven runs over two innings. East Carolina got all the runs it would need in the first inning when Jamie Paige reached base on an error by third baseman Ryan Graham and Lawthorn followed with a two-run shot to left field, his third homer of the season. The Pirates' first seven batters reached base in the five-run second inning as ECU put the game away. Billy Richardson knocked in a run with a bases loaded single, Lawthorn brought two more home with a double to left field, and Costanzo singled up the middle to bring in two more runs. Delaware scored its only run in the seventh inning as Davison and Van Note led off with singles, Brock Donovan grounded out, and Kelly Buber walked to load the bases. Hagerich then drew a bases loaded walk from P.J. Connelly to put the Hens on the board.
