Gibbons Complete Game Stops Hens' CAA Win Streak at Six

FAIRFAX, VA -- Eric Gibbons tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout as George Mason University downed the University of Delaware baseball team, 2-0, Friday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action at Spuhler Field in Virginia.

The Blue Hens (28-19, 10-8 CAA) dropped their third-straight contest and saw their six-game conference win streak snapped while the Patriots (32-13, 16-3 CAA) won their third-straight conference game.

George Mason picked up the only run they would need in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Jeff Palumbo lead off the inning with a walk and scored on a single by Adam Innerst. The Patriots added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Palumbo drew a two-out walk and was plated on an RBI triple by Matt Cooksey.

Junior Ryan Graham (right) went 2-for-4 with two doubles for the Blue Hens while senior Steve Van Note and sophomore Brian Valichka also had hits.

Gibbons struck out seven to improve to 6-4 on the season for George Mason. Delaware junior Scott Rambo suffered the loss to fall to 6-5 on the season, allowing four hits and two earned runs in 7.1 innings of work, striking out five. Sophomore Joe Coudon pitched the final 0.2 innings for Delaware.

The Blue Hens and Patriots play game two of their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
