George Mason 5, Delaware 4 (11 Innings) May 15, 2004 Mihalik Sets UD Strikeout Record in Loss Box Score FAIRFAX, VA -- Chris Looze doubled to center field to score Matt Cooksey with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning and give George Mason a 5-4 win over the University of Delaware baseball team in Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Virginia. In defeat, Blue Hen senior and starting pitcher Mike Mihalik (right) struck out six in 8.1 innings of work, giving him 259 strikeouts for his career to move past Rich McGuire into first place all-time at the University of Delaware. He allowed nine hits and four earned runs while walking three batters but picked up a no-decision on the afternoon. Additionally, the Hens secured a berth in the 2004 CAA tournament by virtue of James Madison's 8-3 loss to William & Mary on Saturday afternoon. The tournament will be held on the campus of UNC Wilmington on May 26-29. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth, Blue Hen sophomore Todd Davison singled to left field to score junior Ryan Graham and tie the game at four and send it to extra innings. The Patriots (33-13, 17-3 CAA) scored three times in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Jeff Palumbo singled to left to score Jimmy Freund before Nick Shimer doubled to left to score both Palumbo and Cooksey. The Hens struck back for two in the top of the fourth to cut the GMU lead to 3-2. Sophomore catcher Brian Valichka hit one of his three doubled on the afternoon to left to score junior Dave Harden to make it 3-1, followed by a sacrifice fly by junior Ed McDonnell to plate junior Kelly Buber to bring Delaware to within a run. In the sixth, McDonnell singled home Valichka to tie the game at three. George Mason regained the lead at 4-3 in the seventh on an RBI single by Looze that scored Palumbo. Jason Mills picked up the win for George Mason to even his record at 3-3 on the season, allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings of relief. Starting pitcher Stacen Gant worked eight innings of five-hit ball, allowing three runs while striking out eight. Sophomore Joe Coudon took the loss for Delaware, allowing three hits and one run in 2.1 innings in relief of Mihalik.
