George Washington 11, Delaware 2 March 30, 2004 Shanley's Grand Slam Propels Colonials Past Blue Hens Box Score ARLINGTON, VA - Tom Shanley went 4 for 5 with a grand slam and five RBI as George Washington dealt the University of Delaware a 11-2 loss Tuesday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. The Blue Hens (13-11), who dropped their seventh straight decision, were held hitless through four innings and didn't score until the seventh. Junior Ed McDonnell hit a sac fly to right field to score junior Dave Harden before junior Brian Flynn plated classmate Kelly Buber on an RBI groundout. The Colonials (16-11) opened the scoring in the top of second inning, scoring four times. Bill Simpson singled home Joe Michalski and Tom Shanley followed with a single that plated Michalski to give George Washington a 2-0 lead. Anthony Ragliani was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which brought home Simpson to make it 3-0 before Matt Owens scored on a fielders choice to make it 4-0. George Washington blew the game open in the bottom of the third when Shanley belted his second home run of the season, a grand slam that gave the Colonials a 8-0 lead. They expanded the lead to 11-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Jeff Millsom singled home Magliani and Matt Owens. Freshman Chat Kerfoot (0-1) suffered the loss for Delaware, allowing 10 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out three in four innings of work. He also hit three George Washington batters. Anthony Smith picked up his fourth win of the season for George Washington, going six innings and allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out nine. The Blue Hens return to action Wednesday when they host the University of Maryland at 2:30 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
