NEWARK,
DE -- Ryan Roberson went 3-for-5 with two home runs and
six RBI and Bill Simpson had a three-run home run and four
RBI as George Washington University survived a late rally by
the University of Delaware for a 15-12 win in non-conference
baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium in
Newark.
Trailing 15-4 entering the bottom of the
ninth, the Blue Hens (28-17) rallied for eight runs - six
unearned - to cut the Colonials (37-14) lead to 15-12.
Delaware brought the tying run to the plate in sophomore
catcher Brian Valichka, but he grounded into a
fielders choice to end the rally.
The loss snapped the Blue Hens nine-game
winning streak while the Colonials won their 13th straight
game, which ties the longest winning streak in George
Washington history.
Delaware senior Steve Van Note
(right) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when
he launched his 10th home run of the season over the fence
in left field, scoring sophomore Todd Davison to give
the Hens a 2-0 lead. Junior Kelly Buber followed with
a solo blast of his own - his second in as many games - to
up the lead to 3-0.
Robertson answered back in the top of the
second with his 12th home run of the season, a solo blast
over the right field fence to cut the Delaware lead to 3-1.
Simpson followed with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded
to score Anthony Smith and bring the Colonials within a run
at 3-2 before Joe Michalski doubled down the left field line
to score Brad Rosenblat and tie the game at
three.
The Colonials took a 5-3 lead in the top
of the fourth on a 2-run double to center field by Roberson
that scored Tom Shanley and Anthony Raglani. Smith followed
with a grounder to first that snuck under the glove of Van
Note at first that allowed Roberson to score from second,
upping the lead to 6-3.
A throwing error by Valichka with the
bases loaded in the seventh scored Smith to increase the
lead to 7-3 and open the door to a six-run inning. Simpson
followed with a three-run home run to left-center field that
gave the Colonials a 10-3 lead before Shanley hit an RBI
groundout to make it 11-3. Raglani capped the scoring with
an RBI double to right-center to up the lead to
12-3.
Delaware cut the lead to 12-4 when
Davison scored on an RBI groundout by junior Dave
Harden in the bottom of the seventh. Roberson launched
his second round tripper of the game in the top of the ninth
for George Washington, scoring Michael Parker and Raglani to
make it 15-4 Colonials.
The home run by Roberson proved to be
critical as Delaware scored eight runs in a ninth inning
that featured five errors - three by second baseman Mickey
Shupin, one by shortstop Michael Parker and one by Robinson
at third base. Valichka started the inning with an RBI
single tat scored Harden to make it 15-5. Buber then scored
on an error by Shupin to make it 15-6. Freshman Bryan
Hagerich followed with a single to third base that
scored Valichka and then junior Brock Donovan singled
to right field to load the bases for junior Ryan
Graham, who singled to score junior Ed McDonnell
and make it 15-8. Davison came to the plate next and
reached on a fielders choice that allowed Hagerich to score
before Van Note also reached on a fielders choice that
scored Donovan, bringing the Hens to within five at 15-10.
Davison scored on a wild pitch by reliever Derrick Lutz to
make it 15-11 before Buber singled to shortstop to score Van
Note and bring the tying run to the plate in Valichka.
Dan Pfau picked up the win for George
Washington, allowing just one run and no hits in two innings
of work to improve to 4-0 this season and 10-0 in his
career. Nate CasaGrande tossed two scoreless innings in
relief of starter Nick Koken, who allowed three runs on
three hits in two innings of work. Avi Rasowski tossed 1.2
innings of relief for George Washington but was chased in
the eighth after Graham drilled a line drive off his left
knee, which brought Lutz into the game. He proceeded to
allow five hits and eight runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings
of work before closing the door on the Hens.
Freshman Billy Harris suffered the
loss for the Blue Hens, allowing eight hits and six runs
(five earned) in 3.2 innings of work, striking out two.
Freshman Mitch Heckert worked 2.1 innings of relief
but allowed four runs on just one hit before being replaced
by sophomore Joe Coudon. He allowed two runs on three
hits in one inning of work and was followed by senior
Mike Iannucci, who gave up three hits and three
earned runs in 2.0 innings of relief.
The Blue Hens return to action on Tuesday
when they host the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University at
3 p.m.
