Score
NEWARK,
DE - Junior Dave Harden went 2 for 5 with a
two-run home run and four RBI and junior Ed McDonnell
went 4 for 5 with three RBI and three runs scored as the
University of Delaware baseball team defeated James Madison
University, 13-9, in Colonial Athletic Association action
Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens (22-16, 5-7 CAA) won for
the ninth time in 11 games while the Dukes (26-15, 7-6 CAA)
lost their second-straight following a four-game winning
streak. Additionally, Delaware has now won two straight over
JMU while snapping the Dukes' five-game CAA win
streak.
Delaware opened the scoring in the bottom
of the second inning, scoring four times to take a 4-0 lead.
After sophomore Brian Valichka scored on an infield
single by junior Ryan Graham (right), senior Steve
Van Note drew a bases loaded walk to give the Blue Hens
a 2-0 lead. Harden followed with a double down the left
field line to score sophomore Todd Davison and Graham
to up the lead to 4-0.
James Madison struck back for two in the
top of the third on Mike Butia's 16th home run of the
season, a two-run blast over the right field fence that was
his first on the road this season. The Blue Hens got one of
those runs back in the bottom of the third as sophomore
Brent Rogers dropped down a bunt with McDonnell at
third. Dukes pitcher Bobby Lasko threw home but McDonnell
beat the play, giving the Hens a 5-2 lead.
Delaware junior Kelly Buber
extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an RBI single
in the bottom of the fourth that scored Van Note, upping the
lead to 6-2. Van Note, who led off the inning, was hit in
the back by the second pitch after the first pitch was
thrown behind his head.
Nate Schill's RBI double for the Dukes
cut the deficit to 6-3 but the Blue Hens struck back for
four runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by
Harden's 13th home run of the season. With Van Note on
second, Harden belted the pitch from Ryan Lobban over the
fence in left center to extend the Hens lead to
10-3.
The Dukes refused to fold, scoring six
times in the top of the sixth to make it a 10-9 game. The
big blow came off the bat of Davis Stoneburner, who ripped a
line drive over the left field fence for a three-run home
run, his third of the season.
McDonnell gave the Hens some breathing
room in the bottom of the sixth as he blasted his second
home run of the season over the left field fence, upping the
lead to 12-9. In the seventh, McDonnell laced a single to
center to score Buber and increase the lead to
13-9.
Junior Scott Rambo picked up his
fifth win of the season, tossing five innings of five hit
ball, allowing six runs (four earned) while striking out
seven. Lasko suffered the loss for the Dukes, allowing seven
hits and six earned runs in 3.1 innings of work, striking
out one. Freshman Mitch Heckert and senior Mike
Iannucci followed Rambo before sophomore Joe
Coudon came on to earn his sixth save of the
season.
The Blue Hens and Dukes play game two of
this three-game series Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah
Stadium at 1 p.m.
