Maryland 9, Delaware 6 March 31, 2004 Hens Bang out 12 Hits but Strand 14 Runners Box Score NEWARK, DE - Matt Maropis went 3 for 4 with three RBI and Dan Melvin knocked in two runs as the University of Maryland downed the University of Delaware, 9-6, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Bob Hannah Stadium. The loss extends the Blue Hens (13-12) losing streak to eight games while the Terrapins (13-12) picked up their second win in as many days. Delaware stranded 14 runners on the afternoon and squandered several scoring opportunities as it dropped its fourth-straight home game after winning the previous 12, dating back to last season. Maryland scored a single run in each of the first five innings and led throughout the game. Jason Maxey singled in Maropis in the first to give the Terps a 1-0 lead before Melvin scored in the second on a double-play to increase the lead to 2-0. In the third, Will Frazier singled home Kevin Hart to make it 3-0 and Elliot Singletary singled home Melvin in the fourth to up the lead to 4-0. The Hens got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Bryan Hagerich singled home junior Dave Harden (above), cutting the lead to 4-1. Maryland got the run back in the top of the fifth when Melvin doubled home Frazier, giving the Terps a 5-1 lead. The Hens scratched another run across in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore Brent Rogers scored on a fielders choice to cut the deficit to 5-2. Delaware scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-4 game. Junior Ryan Graham reached on a throwing error by Maropis that scored sophomore Brian Valichka. Rogers then doubled to center to score Valichka. Maryland regained its three-run lead in the top of the seventh when Frazier scored on an RBI groundout and Melvin hit a sac fly to score Maxey. They stretched the lead to 9-4 in the top of the ninth when Maropis singled in Truan Mehl and Melvin. The Hens struck for two in the ninth as Valichka scored on a fielders choice and Graham scored on an RBI double by Rogers before senior Steve Van Note struck out to the the game. Freshman Billy Harris suffered the loss for Delaware, allowing nine hits and five earned runs in five innings of work, striking out one. Josh Andrews picked up the win for the Terps to improve to 3-0 on the season, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings of work while striking out three. The Blue Hens return to action on Friday when they open a three-game homestand against Colonial Athletic Association rival UNC Wilmington.
