DE - Junior Scott Rambo struck out nine in 6.2
innings of work and junior Dave Harden (right) belted
a two-run home run as the University of Delaware baseball
team picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association win
of the season, downing Old Dominion 5-3 at Bob Hannah
Stadium in Newark, DE.
The win put the Blue Hens back over the
.500 mark for the season at 15-14 and improved their CAA
mark to 1-5 while the Monarchs fell to 13-21 on the year and
3-7 in conference play.
The Blue Hens scored twice in the bottom
of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Ryan
Graham doubled with one out and was plated on Harden's
12th home run of the season over the left center field
fence.
Junior Kelly Buber extended his
hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single in the
bottom of the fourth inning. Classmate Ed McDonnell
stepped to the plate next and was hit by a pitch, putting
runners on first and second with no outs. ODU starting
pitcher Justin Verlander settled down for the Monarchs and
struck out sophomore Brian Valichka and junior
Brock Donovan, but sophomore Todd Davison
laced a 3-2 pitch through the right side of the infield,
scoring Buber to extend the Hens lead to 3-0.
Old Dominion tied the game at three with
three runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Monarchs
loaded the bases on a throwing error by Graham, a fielding
error by Donovan and a walk to Derek James. Bryan Cipolla
followed with a single down the left field line to score
both Allen Strick and Brandon Carter. Eric Mesa followed
with an RBI single to tie the game.
Delaware struck back for a single run in
the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead on an RBI
groundout by Donovan that scored pinch runner Dan
Kozek. The Hens added an insurance run in the bottom of
the eighth when Davison scored on a wild pitch from Monarch
reliever Dan Arrowood.
Rambo evened his record at 4-4 with the
win, hurling 6.2 innings of four-hit ball, allowing three
unearned runs while striking out nine. Verlander, a member
of Team USA last summer and a likely first-round selection
in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft, fell to 4-4 on the
season with the loss, allowed nine hits and four runs (three
earned) in seven innings of work, striking out nine.
Freshman Mitch Heckert pitched 1.1 innings of
scoreless relief for Delaware before sophomore Joe Coudon
came on in the ninth to earn his third save of the
season.
The Blue Hens and Monarchs play game two
of their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at
Bob Hannah Stadium.
