Old Dominion 14, Delaware 2 April 17, 2004 Monarchs Pound Out 19 Hits, Use Late-Inning Barrage to Top Hens Box Score NEWARK, DE - Junior Donnie Smith tossed a complete game, three hitter and senior Derek James blasted a two-run home run as Old Dominion University knocked off the University of Delaware, 14-2, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. Smith struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Hens lost for the first time in their last three outings to fall to 1-6 in the CAA and 15-15 overall. Additionally, Allen Strick had five RBI and both Brandon Carter and Bryan Cipolla each had two RBI for Old Dominion, which banged out a season-high 19 hits to improve to 4-7 in conference play and 14-21 overall. Delaware sophomore Brian Valichka (right) gave the Hens an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, hitting his third home run of the season over the 330 marker in left field. The home run was just the fourth allowed by Smith this season. The Monarchs tied the game in the top of the third on a two-run home run by James that just cleared the right field wall. They took the lead at 3-2 one inning later when Keith Hahn scored on a fielders choice by Carter. Old Dominion scored twice in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. Tyler Belcher hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Cipolla, followed by a single by Justin Gregula to left field to score Dana Arrowood. The Monarchs added a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by James that scored Carter and two in the eighth on an RBI double by Strick and an RBI single by Carter to up the lead to 8-2. The Monarchs tacked on six runs off freshman pitcher Billy Harris in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 14-2. Cipolla singled up the middle to score Steven Harris before pinch runner C.J. Lee scored on a wild pitch. Strick then launched a grand slam over the 365 mark in left center field to put Old Dominion up 14-2. Delaware junior Kelly Buber extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning. He leads the Hens with a .389 batting average. Senior Mike Mihalik allowed nine hits and five earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, striking out four. In the process, he moved into third place on Delaware's all-time strikeout list with 333, passing Steve Young (1978-81). The Blue Hens and Monarchs conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
