Delaware 5, Old Dominion 4 April 18, 2004 Harden's Single in Ninth Gives Hens' First CAA Series Win of Season Box Score NEWARK, DE -- Junior Dave Harden (right) singled home senior Steve Van Note in the bottom of the ninth inning as the University of Delaware baseball team won its first Colonial Athletic Association series of the season with a 5-4 win over Old Dominion University at Bob Hannah Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Blue Hens (16-15, 2-6 CAA), who also defeated Old Dominion 5-3 on Friday afternoon, carried a 4-3 lead into the top of the eighth inning but an RBI single from Steven Harris in the eighth and an RBI single from Brandon Carter in the top of the ninth tied the game at four. Delaware broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seven inning on an RBI double by junior Kelly Buber that extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Buber laced the first pitch he saw down the left field line, scoring Van Note and Harden to give the Hens a 4-2 lead. The Monarchs (14-22, 4-8 CAA) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI double by Keith Hahn that scored Tyler Belcher. The Hens trimmed the lead to 2-1 on a home run by Todd Davison in the bottom half of the inning. Davison led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two. Old Dominion nearly took the lead in the top of the sixth, putting runners on first and second with no outs on back-to-back singles by Brandon Carter and Steven Harris. Delaware senior starting pitcher Jarame Beaupre settled down and got Derek James to pop to second baseman Brock Donovan, then struck out Brian Cipolla before junior Ed McDonnell threw out Carter at home following a single by Dana Arrowood to end the inning. Delaware threatened to score in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore Brian Valicka and McDonnell led off the inning with consecutive singles, but freshman Dan Kozek and Donovan went down swinging and sophomore Brent Rogers lined out to centerfield to end the threat. Beaupre allowed 11hits and three earned runs, striking out four while sophomore Joe Coudon allowed four hits and one earned run as he earned his first win of the seasson. Burok was chased after just 2.2 innings for Old Dominion, allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out two. Dana Arrowood suffered the loss or the Monarchs, allowing five hits and two earned runs in 3.0 innings of work to fall to 3-3 on the season. The Blue Hens return to action this Tuesday when they travel to State College, PA to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State University in a doubleheader.
