Hits, Three RBI Spark Hens To Doubleheader

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Senior
Steve Van Note went seven for nine with a double,
triple and three RBI as the University of Delaware baseball
team swept a doubleheader from Penn State University on
Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 9-3 and game two 4-3 at
Beaver Field.
The Blue Hens (18-15) scored nine times
in the first three innings to build a 9-0 lead in game one.
Junior Dave Harden and freshman Bryan Flynn
each had RBI singled and junior Ed McDonnell also
singled in two runs to give Delaware a 4-0 lead in the
first. In the third, McDonnell tripled home junior Kelly
Buber, freshman Dan Kozek singled in McDonnell,
sophomore Brent Rogers plated Kozek on a sacrifice
fly and Van Note tripled home junior Ryan Graham and
Flynn to up the lead to 9-0.
The Nittany Lions (18-16) scored single
runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh on a sacrifice fly by
Derrick Barr and RBI singles by Colin Runt and Scott Gumm.
Freshman Chad Kerfoot picked up
his first career win for Delaware, allowing five hits and
two earned runs in five innings of work. Freshman Mitch
Heckert came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing
two hits and one earned run while striking out two. Penn
State starter Jared Hopewell was chased after just two
innings after allowing eight hits and six earned runs while
striking out four.
In game two, the Hens scored three times
in the top of the first behind an RBI single by Van Note
that scored Rogers and one by sophomore catcher Brian
Valichka that scored both Van Note and sophomore Todd
Davison.
Penn State rallied for three runs in the
bottom of the fifth to tie the game at three on a two-run
home run by Lance Thompson and an RBI single by Clint Eury.
The Hens pushed across the eventual winning run in the top
of the sixth when Graham singled home Valichka. Sophomore
closer Joe Coudon came in to pitch the bottom of the
seventh for Delaware and allowed the first two runners to
reach base before shutting down the Nittany Lions to earn
his fourth save of the season.
Freshman Billy Harris notched his
first career win, working 1.2 innings of relief and allowing
two hits and no runs while striking out one. Sean Stidfole
took the loss for Penn State, allowing one run on one hit in
1.2 innings of work.
The Blue Hens return to action this
Friday when they travel to Maryland to open a three-game
series against Colonial Athletic Association rival Towson at
3 p.m.
