Four RBI In Loss
Senior Steve Van Note (right) has a home run and four RBI for the Blue Hens, who lost their second-straight game following a nine-game winning streak. Rutgers (29-17), which has now won six of its last seven games, opened the scoring in the top of the first when Jeff Grose launched his second home run of the season over the right field fence to put the Scarlet Knights up 1-0. The Scarlet Knights pushed the lead to 8-0 in the second behind an RBI single by Tim Querns, a bases loaded walk to score Johnny Defendis, an RBI single by Jeff Grose, an error by junior right fielder Dave Harden to score Querns and a three-run home run by Rich Canuso. Greg Badger pushed the lead to 9-0 in the third when he doubled in Jason Grover before Grose plated Badger to increase the lead to 10-0. The Blue Hens (28-18) answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Van Note belted his 10th home home run of the season and second in as many games, scoring junior Brock Donovan and sophomore Todd Davison to cut the deficit to 10-3. In the fifth, Van Note singled home junior Ryan Graham to cut the lead to 10-4 before Harden singled to score Davison and make it 10-5. After Grose scored on a fielding error by Davison to put the Scarlet Knights in front 11-5, Cerulo blasted a grand slam off Delaware senior reliever Mike Iannucci to put Rutgers in front 15-5. Eric Dial evened his record at 4-4 with the win, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Freshman Chad Kerfoot suffered the loss for Delaware, allowing nine hits and 10 runs (eight earned) in five innings of work. The Blue Hens return to action on Friday when they open a three-game series against CAA-leading George Mason in Fairfax, VA at 3 p.m. AGATE:
