Hens Sweep Doubleheader from Hawks

NEWARK, DE - The University of Delaware baseball team picked up its first two wins of the 2004 season by sweeping a doubleheader from Saint Joseph's at Bob Hannah Stadium in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens rallied from a two-run ninth-inning deficit to down the Hawks in game one, 9-8, before blasting them in the second game, 19-4.

Senior Steve Van Note posted six RBI on the afternoon, including a three-run home run in game two, and junior Dave Harden picked up three RBI as the Hens (2-4) won their fourth-straight home game, dating back to last season.

In game one, Delaware built a 4-1 lead behind a Van Note triple that scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Saint Joseph's fought back in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 lead which it would not relinquish until the bottom of the seventh. Harden slammed his third home run of the season for Delaware in the bottom of the seventh to even the game at six.

Saint Joseph's scored twice in the top of the ninth on a Jason Tarewicz double to give SJU an 8-6 lead. Delaware sophomore Todd Davison lead off the ninth with a single and scored on a double by sophomore Brock Donovan, cutting the Hawks lead to 8-7. Following an intentional walk to freshman Dan Kozek, freshman Brian Hagerich singled home Harden and Donovan to give the Hens their first win of the season.

In game two, Delaware jumped all over Hawks starting pitcher Jeff Williams early, tagging him for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning before chasing him after just 1.2 innings of work. The 10-run inning was highlighted by three-run home run by Kozek - the first hit of his Delaware career - and a two-run shot by Van Note. The Hens scored twice in both the second and third innings and five times in the fourth to build a commanding 19-1 lead after five.

Freshman Mitch Heckert picked up the win in game one, tossing three innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out four, and junior Scott Rambo earned the win in game two, striking out five in five innings of work. Joe Mucci suffered the loss for the Hawks (1-7) in game one while Williams suffered his first loss of the season in game two.

The Hens conclude the series with a game tomorrow at Bob Hannah Stadium at 1 p.m.
