Tigers Rally From 5-1 Deficit to Stun Blue Hens

Box Score

TOWSON, MD -- Shane Justis, Bobby Paduano and Brian McKenna each had two RBI as Towson University rallied from a 5-1 deficit to stun the University of Delaware baseball team, 9-7, in Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park in Towson, MD.

Sophomore Todd Davison, who hit a three-run home run in yesterday's suspended game against the Tigers, went 1-3 with two RBI for the Blue Hens (19-16, 3-7 CAA), who saw their four-game win streak snapped.

After the Tigers (14-23, 5-9 CAA) got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI triple by Adam Heffron that scored McKenna, Delaware scored five times in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead. Davison's RBI single with one out scored junior Kelly Buber and sophomore Brian Valichka to give the Hens a 2-1 lead. Freshman Bryan Hagerich then scored on a passed ball before Davison was plated on an RBI groundout by junior Brock Donovan. Junior Ryan Graham singled home sophomore Brent Rogers to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Tigers struck back for two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 5-3. McKenna belted his sixth home run of the season to left center with two outs before Casper Wells singled to center to score Heffron. Two innings later, the Tigers tied the game at five with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Paduano that scored Hans Falkenhan and one by McKenna that scored Justis.

Towson took a 9-5 lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Following an RBI groundout by Falkenhan that scored Jeremy Stifler, Justis doubled to left center, scoring Brad Stonesifer and Mark Chiccini. Paduano then singled to left field to score Justis as the Tigers opened up a four-run lead.

Delaware scored a single run in the top of the seventh as senior Steve Van Note scored on a double play ball hit by Buber and one in the top of the ninth as junior Dave Harden scored on a passed ball.

Tyler Travis picked up his first win of the season for Towson, allowing five hits and two unearned runs in six innings of relief before giving way in the ninth to Chris Rhoades, who earned his first save of the season. Senior Mike Mihalik started for Delaware, allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) in 5.0 innings of work. Freshman Mitch Heckert suffered the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season.

Prior to the start of the game, both the Blue Hens and Tigers completed Friday afternoon's suspended game. The Blue Hens held a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning when play resumed and went on to win the contest in 10 innings, 8-5, behind an RBI single by Graham and a two-run home run by Van Note in the top of the 10th. Mihalik started the contest and struck out two in earning his third win of the season. Combined with his five strikeouts in the second game, he moved past Matt Phillips (1995-98) into second place on Delaware's all-time strikeout list with 241. He is 12 behind Rich McGuire (1999-2002) for first place in school history.

The University of Delaware and Towson University conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Schuerholz Park.
