Connecticut 11, Delaware 9 March 20, 2004 Hens See Win Streaks Snapped Box Score NEWARK, DE - Ted Garry struck out pinch-hitter Ed McDonnell to end a ninth-inning rally and record his first collegiate save as Connecticut snapped Delaware's 13-game winning streak with an 11-9 win in baseball action at Bob Hannah Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win was the seventh straight for the Huskies, who ran their record to 7-5 this season. Delaware lost for the first time since February 22 and fell to 13-5 on the season. It also snapped Delaware's 12-game home winning streak dating back to last season, including 10 home wins this season. Steve Van Note extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games. The game was a wild, see-saw affair from the outset with at least one of the team's scoring in eight of the nine innings and the teams combining for 13 extra-base hits. Delaware extended an early lead to 4-1 in the third on a two-run single by Kelly Buber. However, Connecticut used a pair of two-run home runs by Mike Leonard and Mike McDonough to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth. Delaware tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single by Dave Harden. Connecticut retook the lead in the top of the fifth when Russ D'Argento and Tony Mallozzi opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, but Delaware took the lead back again in its half of the inning, 7-6, when Brian Valichka hit a line drive two-run home run that just cleared the left field wall. Connecticut, however, took the lead for good in the sixth when it scored three runs and chased starting pitcher Scott Rambo (3-2). The Blue Hens closed to within two in the ninth when Bryan Hagerich hit a towering two-run home run just inside the left field foul pole. However, after Valichka singled with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate, Garry came on to get McDonnell and earn his first save. Mike James (2-1) earned the win for Connecticut, allowing 11 hits and seven runs over seven innings of work. D'Argento finished the game 4-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI for Connecticut. Valichka, one of five Blue Hens with multiple hits on the afternoon, was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored for Delaware. Delaware's Steve Van Note went 2-for-5 at the plate, extending his hitting streak to 15 consecutive games.
