UMBC 7, Delaware 6 March 23, 2004 Clark, UMBC Edge Blue Hens Box Score NEWARK, DE - UMBC reliever Kyle Wildasin struck out University of Delaware sophomore Brian Valichka with two outs and the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Retrievers a 7-6 win over the Blue Hens baseball team Tuesday afternoon at and cold and windy Bob Hannah Stadium. Kevin Brooks and Wildasin each had two RBI for UMBC (4-15), which won its second-straight after losing seven in a row. The Blue Hens (13-7), meanwhile, have now lost three-straight following a 13-game winning streak. Sophomore Brent Rogers went 3-for-4 with a home run and junior Kelly Buber (above) had two RBI for Delaware while senior Steve Van Note doubled to lead off the seventh inning, extending his hitting-streak to 17 games. The team's combined for 11 total errors - seven by UMBC and four by Delaware - which led to two unearned runs by the Retrievers and five by the Blue Hens. After the Blue Hens pushed across a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Retrievers scored four time in the top of the second. Chris Cerullo singled home Jack Saffron, followed by an RBI double by Brooks that scored Mike Orlando and Cerullo. An RBI double by starting pitcher and former Newark HS standout Zach Clark plated Brooks and give UMBC a 4-1 lead. Delaware junior Ryan Graham doubled in Valichka to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the second, but UMBC struck back with a single run in the top of the third to go back in front 5-2. The Hens scored again in the bottom half of the inning as Van Note scored following a bobbled ground ball by Brooks off the bat of Buber. Wildasin homered off Delaware senior reliever Mike Iannucci to lead off the top of the seventh and was credited with an RBI on a fielders choice in the eighth to give the Retrievers a 7-3 lead. Rogers homered for Delaware in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-4, and the Hens loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of ninth. Freshman Bryan Hagerich flied to center to score sophomore Todd Davison to make it 7-5, followed by a single by Buber that scored Van Note to put the Hens to within a run at 7-6. Delaware pinch-hitter Dan Kozek followed with a ground out to third on the first pitch for the second out and Valichka fanned on a 3-2 count to end the game. Senior Jarame Beaupre suffered his first loss of the season for Delaware, allowing four hits and four runs - all unearned - in two innings of work. Clark picked up the win for UMBC, allowing three runs (one earned) and eight hits in seven innings of work, striking out seven. The Blue Hens return to action on Friday when they travel to Virginia to open conference play against William & Mary.
