Back-To-Back Home Runs in Eighth Propel Rams

NEWARK, DE -- Anthony Granato and Jeff Parrish launched back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and Cla Meredith tossed four innings of scoreless relief as Virginia Commonwealth rallied to down the University of Delaware, 4-2, in Colonial Athletic Association action Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark.

Granato's fourth home run of the season off Delaware junior reliever Scott Rambo scored Scott Sizemore and put the Rams (33-2014-8 CAA) in front 3-2. Parrish followed with his sixth round tripper of the season to increase the lead to 4-2.

The loss extends the Blue Hens (28-22) losing streak to six games and drops them below .500 in CAA play at 10-11. Meredith improved to 7-3 with the win, allowing three hits and one run in four innings of work with four strikeouts as VCU extended its winning streak to three. Rambo, meanwhile, fell to 6-6 with the loss, allowing four runs in three innings of work with three strikeouts.

Junior Ryan Graham put the Hens in front 1-0 with an RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning that scored sophomore Brian Valichka. Graham's second RBI single in the bottom of the sixth scored freshman pinch runner Bryan Hagerich and increased the lead to 2-0.

The Rams cut the deficit to 2-1 on an RBI single by Dustin Sloan off Delaware junior relief pitcher Scott Rambo in the top of the seventh that scored Barrett Ripley.

Delaware senior starting pitcher Mike Mihalik (right) was extremely solid in six innings of work, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out 10. Virginia Commonwealth starter Justin Orenduff was equally effective, allowing four hits and one run in five innings of work, fanning 10 Hens.

The Blue Hens and Rams will play game two of their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
