Beaupre Lead Hens To Win
The win snaps the Blue Hens (29-22, 11-11 CAA) personal five-game losing streak to the Rams and ends its six-game slide overall. The Delaware win combined with William & Mary's 6-2 win at Towson clinches the No. 6 seed for the Hens in next week's upcoming CAA Tournament in Wilmington, NC, where they will face No. 1 George Mason. The Blue Hens opened up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Van Note's 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right-center field fence that scored sophomore Todd Davison (right). Delaware pushed the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by Davison and Van Note and a single by junior Dave Harden that brought home Davison following a throwing error by VCU second baseman Scott Sizemore. The Rams began to chip away at the lead in the top of the third following a long home run by Anthony Granato, his fourth of the season and second in as many days, making it 5-1. However, the Hens answered right back in the bottom half of the inning as a leadoff home run by sophomore Brian Valichka - his sixth of the season - put the Hens back up by five. Junior Brock Donovan B followed a single by junior Ed McDonnell with his seventh double of the season to plate McDonnell and make it 7-1. In the fifth, junior Kelly Buber belted his seventh home run of the season over the left field fence to increase the lead to 8-1. Valichka scored on a wild pitch by VCU reliever Harold Mozingo to make it 9-1 before Davison drilled an RBI double off the wall in left field to score Donovan and junior Ryan Graham and put the Hens in front 11-1. McDonnell upped the lead to 14-1 with his fourth home run of the season, a towering three-run blast that easily cleared the 400 foot marker in center field that scored Buber and freshman pinch runner Bryan Flynn. The Rams touched junior reliever Chris Garrick for a run in the top of the seventh on a sac fly by Robbie Gragnani but were shut down the rest of the way. The Hens tacked on two more runs in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Harden and a sac fly by freshman Dan Kozek to make it 16-2. Beaupre picked up his sixth win of the season, allowing three hits and one run while striking out four in five innings of work. Matt Prendergast suffered the loss for Virginia Commonwealth to fall to 8-3 on the season, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (six earned) in just three innings of work. DE -- Senior Steve Van Note went 2-for-5 with a
home run and three RBI and senior Jarame Beaupre
struck out four in five innings of work as the University of
Delaware baseball team snapped its six-game losing skid with
a 16-2 win over Virginia Commonwealth on Senior Day in
Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon at
Bob Hannah Stadium in Delaware.
