Help Delaware To Win No. 30
The Blue Hens finished the regular season 30-22 and 12-11 in the CAA while the Rams dropped their second-straight to drop to 14-10 in conference play and 33-22 overall. Delaware will be the No. 6 seed in this week's CAA Tournament in Wilmington, NC and will take on No. 1 George Mason at noon on Wednesday at Brooks Field on the campus of UNC Wilmington. Virginia Commonwealth will be the No. 3 seed and take on No. 4 William & Mary following the Delaware/George Mason contest on Wednesday. In the nightcap, No. 2 UNC Wilmington will take on No. 5 Old Dominion. The Rams opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Joe Meader and an RBI fielders choice by Anthony Gragnani. Delaware answered right back in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at two on an RBI triple by Van Note that score sophomore Todd Davison and a sac fly by junior Dave Harden that brought home Van Note. Virginia Commonwealth regained the lead at 3-2 when the Hens misplayed a rundown at second base, allowing Joe Meader to come around and score from first. In the bottom of the fourth, Valichka launched his seventh home run of the season over the left field fence to bring home junior Kelly Buber and put Delaware back in front, 4-3. Later in the inning, Van Note singled to left with the bases loaded to plate junior Ed McDonnell and sophomore Brent Rogers to push the lead to 6-3. The Rams got to within a run at 6-5 following a two run home run by Meader in the top of the fifth off Delaware freshman relief pitcher Mitch Heckert. A throwing error in the bottom of the sixth on a sac bunt attempt by junior Ryan Graham allowed Rogers and junior Brock Donovan to score. On the same play, a throwing error by right fielder Trai Harris allowed Graham to come around and score a 'Little League' home run. Van Note followed with a sac fly to score Davison from third before Valichka doubled to center to score Harden and make it 11-5 Blue Hens. Delaware tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 15-5 lead. Van Note opened the scoring with an RBI double that scored Davison and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 13-5. Freshman Bryan Hagerich followed with a long home run to left field that scored Davison and made it 15-5. Heckert picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing three hits and three runs in three innings of work, striking out three. Tommy Edelblut suffered the loss for the Rams, allowing five hits and six runs in 3.1 innings of work, striking out five. The No. 6 seed Hens will take on No. 1 seed George Mason Wednesday at noon in the first game of the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC. AGATE: Va.
