WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- University of
Delaware pitcher Joe Coudon hit William & Mary
designated hitter Mike DeCarlo with a pitch with one out and
the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning to send in
the winning run and lead the Tribe past the Blue Hens 6-5 in
a Colonial Athletic Association baseball game Saturday
afternoon at Plumeri Park.
The Blue Hens, who had overcome a 4-1
deficit when they scored four runs in the fifth inning, lost
their fifth straight game to fall to 13-9 (0-2 CAA). William
& Mary, which banged out 14 hits but left 18 men on
base, improved to 18-7, 2-3 CAA. The two teams will play the
third and final game of the three-game set Sunday at 1
p.m.
Delaware designated hitter Kelly Buber
went 3 for 5 and clouted a grand slam in the fifth inning
and third baseman Ryan Graham went 4 for 5 with one RBI.
Coudon allowed four hits and one run in three and one-third
innings but took the loss to fall to 0-2.
William & Mary got home runs from
Terry Revere, DeCarlo, and Chris Rahl with Revere knocking
in three runs to pick up the victory. Tribe reliever Bill
Bray picked up the win as he allowed just two hits and
struck out 10 Blue Hen batters in just four and one-third
innings of action.
The Tribe jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks
to a three-run second inning off starter Mike Mihalik that
was highlighted by Revere's three-run homer to right field.
After Delaware scored its initial run on a sacrifice fly by
Graham in the third, William & Mary came back to make it
4-1 on a solo home run by Rahl to open the third
inning.
Delaware took the 5-4 lead in the fifth
inning as singles by Graham, Todd Davison, and Dave Harden
loaded the bases with two outs. Buber stepped to the plate
and clouted his second home run of the season, a grand slam
to right field off starter Jeff Dagenhart.
Neither team scored again until the ninth
inning when DeCarlo led off the inning with a solo home run
off Delaware reliever Mitch Heckert to send the game into
extra innings.
Neither team threatened in extra innings
until the 12th inning. Will Rhymes led off with a double and
moved to third on a groundout by his brother, Jon Rymes.
Coudon intentionally walked John Lentz and Rahl to load the
bases and the Tribe pulled out the win when DeCarlo was hit
by a pitch, scoring Will Rhymes to send William & Mary
home a winner.
