NEWARK, DE
-- University of Delaware baseball seniors
Brock Donovan (near right) and Dave Harden
(far right) and Donovan's older sister,
Erica, all suffered injuries Friday night,
April 8, when they were struck by a car
that went out of control and jumped the
curb while they were walking along
Delaware Avenue near campus.
Harden, a
senior outfielder from Wilmington, DE
(Dickinson High School), suffered severe
abdominal bruising and underwent surgery
Saturday at Christiana Hospital while
Brock Donovan, a second baseman, fractured
a bone in his left leg and suffered facial
cuts. Erica Donovan suffered a concussion
and underwent surgery for facial injuries.
Harden is expected spend several days in
the hospital while the other two were
treated and released.
Harden's
injuries will end his baseball career at
Delaware but Donovan hopes to return to
action by mid-May, hopefully in time for
the end of the regular season schedule.
The Colonial Athletic Association
Tournament will be held May 25-28 in
Wilmington, NC with the top six teams in
the league standings competing. The Blue
Hens took a 12-15 record (3-3 in CAA) into
Monday's non-league game vs. New York
Tech.
The three
were walking along Delaware Avenue near
Newark High School and Tyre Avenue about 9
p.m. Friday night when the vehicle came
around a bend, jumped the curb, and struck
them. The three were walking to another
teammate's apartment at the time. The
accident is still under investigation.
Harden, a
team co-captain, batted .311 with 56 RBI
and a team-high 14 home runs last year and
was batting .167 with four RBI in 23 games
this season. Donovan batted .310 with 31
RBI and was named to the CAA
All-Tournament team last season. This year
he is batting .282 with 14 RBI as a
starter in all 27 games. He was coming off
a career-high five-hit performance in a
13-11 win over Temple Thursday afternoon.
