9-5, On First Day Of CAA Baseball

NC -- Casey Slattery drilled a grand slam
in the bottom of the sixth while Chris
Fournier and Tyler Youngs hit consecutive
home runs to highlight a four-run bottom
of the eighth as George Mason defeated the
University of Delaware, 9-5, Wednesday
afternoon in the opening game of the 2005
Colonial Athletic Association Baseball
Championship at UNC Wilmington's Brooks
Field.
The
second-seeded Patriots, who improved to
34-17 and have now won all four meetings
with the Blue Hens this season, will face
Virginia Commonwealth Thursday at 7 p.m.
Fifth-seeded
Delaware, which fell to 26-30 on the year
and lost for the first time in three
opening games of the CAA Tournament, will
face Hofstra, a 9-6 first round loser to
UNC Wilmington, Thursday in an elimination
game at 12 noon.
With the
game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth
Blue Hen reliever Mitch Heckert (1-3)
retired the first two batters before
Fournier and Youngs launched back-to-back
home runs to left to put the Patriots up
by two. After Chad Kerfoot relieved
Heckert on the mound Jimmy Freund doubled
and scored when Matt York singled, and
Matt Cooksey capped the rally by tripling
to left to plate York.
George

to start the ninth but retired the next
three batters to secure the win for the
Patriots.
George
Mason took the early lead with an unearned
run in the bottom of the first off Blue
Hen starter Mike McGuire. York led off the
frame by reaching on a throwing error by
Delaware third baseman Brent Rogers, and a
double by Cooksey put runners on second
and third. McGuire then struck out Chris
Looze, but a wild pitch allowed York to
score the first run of the
game.
The Blue
Hens took the lead with a pair of runs in
the top of the fourth, as Todd Davison
doubled to center with one out and Kelly
Buber followed with a homer to center, his
sixth round-tripper of the season.
Richardson then led off the fifth by
hitting his seventh home run of the year
to make it a 3-1 game.
Following
Cooksey's first inning double McGuire
retired 14 straight Patriots before George
Mason rallied for four runs in the bottom
of the sixth. York struck out to open the
inning but reached on a wild pitch, and
walks to Cooksey and Looze loaded the
bases with nobody out. McGuire then struck
out Adam Innerst, but Slattery followed by
drilling a pitch over the rightfield wall
to give the Patriots a 5-3
lead.
Delaware
got a run back in the seventh off George
Mason starter Stacen Gant, a first team
All-CAA selection who struck out nine Blue
Hens in a three-hit complete game shutout
on May 6. Richardson led off with a double
to left and one out later Ryan Graham
singled to center, and Richardson scored
while Graham moved to second on an error
by Cooksey.
After
Heckert pitched a scoreless bottom of the
seventh, Delaware tied the game with a run
off Pannell in the eighth. Brian Valichka
and Adam Tsakonas led off the inning with
singles, and after Valichka moved to third
when Bryan Hagerich bounced into a double
play, he scored on a passed ball. However
the Patriots answered with four runs in
the bottom of the frame to put the game
away.
Gant
allowed four runs, three earned, on seven
hits while striking out seven in seven
innings for George Mason, while Pannell
gave up one unearned run on three hits in
two innings of relief. McGuire gave up
five runs, four earned, on just two hits
while striking out nine in six innings or
work for Delaware, while Heckert gave up
two earned runs on three hits in 1.2
innings and Kerfoot allowd two runs on
three hits in a third of an
inning.
Richardson
led the Blue Hen attack by going 3-for-4
with a pair of runs scored and an RBI,
while Graham and Hagerich had two hits
apiece. Cooksey and Freund each had a pair
of hits while York scored three runs for
George Mason, which had lost to Delaware
on the opening day of the tournament in
each of the other two Blue Hens'
appearances in the
championship.
