Delaware
Pounds Hofstra, 13-2, To Stave off
Elimination On Second Day Of CAA Baseball
Championship
DATE: May
26, 2005
WILMINGTON,
NC -- Ryan Graham, Todd Davison (right),
and Bryan Hagerich each had three hits
including a home run as the University of
Delaware hammered Hofstra University,
13-2, in an elimination game on the second
day of the 2005 CAA Baseball
Championship.
The
fifth-seeded Blue Hens, who improved to
27-30 this season, will face No. 4 Towson,
a 6-1 winner over top seed UNC Wilmington
Thursday afternoon, Friday at 3:30 p.m. in
an elimination game.
Delaware
struck first by scoring an unearned run in
the top of the first inning. Graham led
off by reaching on a fielding error by
Hofstra leftfielder Patrick Rogers, and he
moved to third when Rogers' throw to
second base was wild. Davison then
followed with a single to right to score
Graham, recording the 100th RBI of his
career and extending his hitting streak to
12 games. However the Pride answered back
in the bottom of the frame as Josh Stern
beat out an infield single with one out
and scored when Mike Walsh doubled to
leftcenter.
Delaware
took the lead for good in the second when
Hagerich led off with a home run to
leftcenter, his eighth homer of the
season. Brandon Menchaca then walked, and
after he stole second, Dan Richardson
walked to put runners on first and second
with nobody out. After a flyout it
appeared the Pride might get out of the
jam when Graham hit a groundball to third.
However after Richardson was forced at
second, Hofstra second baseman Andy
Campana threw the ball away at first
attemping to turn the double play,
allowing Menchaca to score on the play and
make it a 3-1 game.
Kelly
Buber led off the third with a walk, and
after Brian Valichka singled, Valichka
moved up on the throw to put runners on
second and third with nobody out and knock
Hofstra starter Charlie Frago out of the
game. After a lineout Hagerich singled up
the middle to plate Buber, and Valichka
scored when Menchaca followed with a
groundout as Delaware took a 5-1
advantage.
The Blue
Hens tacked on a run in the fourth when
Davison launched a two-out homer to
leftfield, his fifth round-tripper of the
year. In the eighth Richardson singled to
left, and after he stole second, Graham
drilled a two-run homer to left, his third
of the season, to put Delaware up 8-1. The
Blue Hens then blew the game open by
scoring five runs in the ninth,
highlighted by a bases loaded single by
Menchaca and a solo home run to right by
Dan Kozek, his fifth of the
year.
That would
be plenty of support for Delaware starter
Brent Gaphardt, who allowed just one run
on eight hits in eight innings of work to
pick up the win and improve to 5-5 on the
season. Gaphardt, who struck out 13
batters during a seven-inning no-hitter in
an 11-0 victory over the Pride on March
26, fanned nine batters while not issuing
a walk in the victory. Kevin Brown allowed
an unearned run despite not giving up a
hit in the bottom of the ninth.
"Good
pitching always wins," said fifth-year
Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. "Brent
pitched very well today for us. We have
been trying to get quality innings from
him, and today the timing was right. He
has really come on strong, and today was
his best day. Our bats also came around
today, and that helped us out
tremendously. We feel good going into
tomorrow with a fifth-year senior like
Scott taking the mound. He has been here
before and we are hoping that experience
will work out for us."
Hagerich
went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two
RBIs to lead the Blue Hen offense, while
Davison was also 3-for-5 with two RBIs and
a run scored. Graham went 3-for-6 with two
runs scored and two RBIs while Valichka
and Richardson each had two hits for
Delaware, which pounded out 16 hits on the
day.
Frago took
the loss for Hofstra and fell to 2-6 after
allowing five runs, three earned, on three
hits while walking four in two-plus
innings on the mound. Reliever David Huth
gave up three earned runs on seven hits in
5.2 innings of work, while Ryan Dunn
allowed five runs on five hits in one
inning.
