Shuts Down Delaware As Towson Eliminates
Blue Hens 5-0 at CAA Baseball

WILMINGTON,
NC -- Towson pitcher Matt Holley threw a
three-hit complete game shutout as Towson
University defeated the University of
Delaware, 5-0, in an elimination game
Friday afternoon on the third day of the
2005 CAA Baseball Championship at UNC
Wilmington's Brooks Field.
The
fourth-seeded Tigers, who improved to
34-23, advance to the final day of the
tournament, while the fifth-seeded Blue
Hens end their season with a 27-31
record.
Towson
struck first by scoring a pair of two-out
runs in the top of the first inning.
Delaware starter Scott Rambo retired the
first two Towson batters, but Casper Wells
was hit by a pitch, Jason Maxey tripled
down the rightfield line, and Mark
Chiccini beat out a bunt single to give
the Tigers the early 2-0 lead.
Delaware
had a chance to answer in the bottom of
the first when with two out Kelly Buber
(above) walked and Brian Valichka singled
to center, but Valichka was thrown out at
second on the play to end the
inning.
In the
fourth Chiccini led off with a single and
Adam Heffron walked, and after a
strikeout, both runners executed a double
steal while Pat Fields struck out looking
to put runners on second and third with
two out. Ryan Schreiter then followed with
a single to left to score both Chiccini
and Heffron to make it a 4-0 game. Towson
had a chance to blow the game open after
Shane Justis singled and Hans Falkenhan
walked to load the bases, but Rambo got
Wells to fly out to center to escape
furthur damage.
The Tigers
added a run in the eighth off Blue Hen
reliever Billy Harris as Chiccini was hit
by a pitch to open the inning and one out
later scored on a double to lefcenter by
Kyle Skellchock.
Holley did
the rest for the Tigers, shutting down
Delaware on just three hits while walking
one. After getting out of the first inning
jam, Holley allowed just a one-out single
to Buber in the fourth and retired the
next 12 Blue Hens before Brandon Menchaca
reached on an error with one out in the
eighth. Holley then got Dan Richardson to
bounce into a fielder's choice and Brock
Donovan to fly out to center, and allowed
only a two-out single to Buber in the
ninth to post his first career complete
game shutout. Holley, who allowed two hits
to the Blue Hens in just a third of an
inning during the regular season, also
struck out five in the victory to improve
to 7-0 on the year.
Rambo, who
fell to 6-5, allowed four earned runs on
six hits while striking out seven and
walking three in six innings of work,
while Harris gave up one earned run on one
hit with one strikeout in the final three
innings.
"Holley
isn't one of Towson's main starters, but
he stepped up for them today," fifth-year
Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said.
"Offensively we just didn't have enough
gas in the tank to get it
done."
