NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team pounded out 18 hits and scored multiple runs in four innings on its way to a 16-7 non-league victory over Delaware State on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior second baseman Todd Davison (right) collected four hits, scored four runs and knocked in five. Alex Buchholz also added four hits for the Blue Hens (16-13).
Delaware jumped out to a big lead with six runs in the bottom of the second inning off of Hornet starter Dan Perkins. The Hens recorded only two hits in the inning, but pushed across the runs by taking advantage of four hit batsmen and three walks. The Hens exceptional patience at the plate during the inning paid off in the walks and hit batsmen, as Perkins struggled to find the strike zone throughout his outing.
The Hornets most serious threat came in the top of the sixth with the Blue Hens leading 10-2. After starter Steve Miklas allowed the Hornets to load the bases with no one out, Kevin Brown was summoned from the bullpen. Brown immediately induced a line drive double play from DSU catcher Randy Boyer, and escaped the inning while allowing only one unearned run. Delaware added four runs in their half of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Miklas pitched five solid innings for the Hens to earn his second win of the year. Perkins took his fifth loss of the season for Delaware State (11-21-2).
The Blue Hens will return to action on Wednesday when they host Temple at 3 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
