HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Alex Buchholz, Brandon Menchaca and Adam Tsakonas each hit two home runs, and the Blue Hens exploded for 10 runs in the seventh inning to power the University of Delaware baseball team past Hofstra University, 17-9, on Friday afternoon.
The trio of Buchholz (at right), Menchaca and Tsakonas combined for six home runs, 12 RBI and scored 11 runs on the day. Senior Todd Davison played in his 199th consecutive game for the Blue Hens, tying a school record set by Joe Shockley between 1977-80. Davison collected four hits on the day.
The Blue Hens (18-13, 5-8 CAA) trailed the Pride (14-21-1, 5-11) 7-6 heading into the top of the seventh inning. The Hens loaded the bases with only one out, bringing Menchaca to the plate. Menchaca stepped to the plate and ripped a triple down the right field line, clearing the bases and putting the Hens up 9-7. Pinch-hitter Scott Shockley followed with a double to center, scoring Menchaca.
After the bases were re-loaded on a walk and a hit batsmen, Davison sent the Hens second bases-loaded triple of the inning down the right field line, and the rout was on. Buchholz followed Davison with his second home run of the day, capping the season-best 10 run inning and putting Delaware up 16-6.
Buchholz’ two home runs give him 14 for the season, tying him with Brian Wallace for second place on Delaware’s freshman home run list. Wallace hit 14 round trippers as a redshirt freshman in 1991. Menchaca totalled two homers, three runs scored, four hits and five RBI on the day.
Every Delaware starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run. The Hens have now scored 51 runs in the last three games.
Delaware starter Todd Ozog struck out six in five innings and left with a 6-5 lead before giving way to Kevin Brown. Brown allowed two runs in the sixth as Hofstra took a 7-6 lead, but got the win to improve to 5-1 after the Hens put the 10 runs up in the following inning.
David Huth, who started the seventh inning for the Pride but recorded only one out, took the loss to fall to 1-3. Kevin Brown worked the last four innings to earn his first save of the season for the Hens.
Delaware and Hofstra will resume their series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Hempstead, NY.
