HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Centerfielder Brandon Menchaca (at right) hit a solo home run with one out in the ninth inning to break a tie game and lead the University of Delaware to a 9-8 win over Hofstra Sunday afternoon and a sweep of their weekend Colonial Athletic Association baseball series.

Menchaca, who hit two home runs in Friday’s win over Hofstra, broke an 8-8 tie with his ninth home run of the season to lead Delaware (20-13, 7-8 CAA) to its fifth straight victory and helped the Blue Hens reach 20 wins for the 34th straight season. Delaware, which defeated the Pride (14-23-1, 5-13 CAA) by scores of 17-9 and 11-2 the previous two days, swept its first CAA road series since downing Old Dominion in three straight in Norfolk, VA last Apr. 22-24.

Delaware, which banged out 14 hits on the day, including seven extra base hits, swept a series from Hofstra for the fifth time in the last seven series and is now 52-8 all-time vs. Hofstra, including winning 10 of the last 11 meetings.

Six different Delaware players collected two hits as Menchaca also delivered a triple, leftfielder Bryan Hagerich had a home run and three runs batted in, and third baseman Adam Tsakonas added a home run and scored three runs. Hofstra collected 13 hits with designated hitter Matt Kougasian knocking in three runs and shortstop Josh Stern collecting four hits.

The Blue Hens entered the final inning down 8-7 after Hofstra had scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run double by Kougasian and an RBI single by Ricky Caputo. Delaware shortstop Todd Davison, who extended a school record by playing in his 201st consecutive game, led off the ninth inning for Delaware with a double and advanced to third when Alex Buchholz grounded out to shortstop.

Hagerich then greeted reliever David Huth with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Davison and tie the game at 8 8. Menchaca then followed with the game-winning home run to left.

Delaware reliever Chad Kerfoot (2-4) picked up the win as he retired Hofstra without a run in the ninth inning. After Stern led off the inning with a single, Nick Panzarella grounded to third with Tsakonas starting a double play. David Cole followed with a single, but Kerfoot closed the door by getting Andy Campana to ground out to first base to end the game.

The Blue Hens jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third on Hagerich’s two-run homer, his 11th of the season, before Hofstra tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Kougasian and Mike Walsh. Delaware regained the lead at 6-3 in the fourth inning by scoring three runs with two outs. Dan Richardson hit a run-scoring double and Buchholz added a two-run single up the middle to key the inning for the Hens.

Hofstra added runs in the sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to 6-5 but the Hens added a run in the eighth on Tsakonas’ fifth home run of the season to go up 7-5. Hofstra then took the short-lived lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
