NEWARK, DE -- Northeastern junior righthanded pitched Adam Ottovino pitched eight dominating innings to lead Northeastern University past the University of Delaware baseball team, 3-0, in a Colonial Athletic Assocation contest on Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Ottavino allowed only four hits and walked one while striking out 12 over his eight innings. Dan Richardson (right) recorded two of the four hits for the Blue Hens (10-8, 0-4 CAA).

Northeastern (7-7, 2-2 CAA) got all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning. With one out the Huskies got back-to-back singles from Arman Sidhu and Mike Tamsin. Sidhu moved up to third on a fielder’s choice that forced Tamsin, then scored on a single through the middle by Matt Morizio. The Hens avoided further trouble when catcher Bill Merkler picked off Morizio with a snap throw behind the runner at first base.

Blue Hens starter Mike McGuire scattered seven hits, all singles, over the first three innings, but was continually able to work his way out of trouble, and did not allow a hit after the third inning. McGuire stranded 11 runners on base over the first five innings to keep Delaware in the game.

In the top of the fifth, Northeastern was able to push across two runs without the benefit of a hit. The Huskies took advantage of three walks and two hit batsmen to take the three-run lead that would hold up the rest of the game.

Delaware’s best chance to score came in the bottom of the seventh. Ottavino hit leadoff man Alex Buchholz, and with one out, Brandon Menchaca’s bloop base hit turned into second and third with one out thanks to aggressive baserunning by both Buchholz and Menchaca. However, with runners at second and third with one out, Ottavino struck out Merkler looking and got Adam Tsakonas to fly out to right field to end the rally.

Buchholz, Todd Davison and Kyle Davis all had double-digit hit streaks stopped by Ottavino. Buchholz, however, reached base twice on the hit-by-pitch and on a walk in the ninth inning. Ottavino, who had previously this year struck out 12 batters against then No. 1 ranked Georgia Tech, earned his first win of the season, while McGuire took his first loss of the season for the Hens.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the second game of the three game set when Dave Pellegrine will take the mound for Northeastern against Todd Ozog for the Blue Hens.
