RICHMOND, VA -- Sophomore rightfielder Dan Richardson’s big day led the University of Delaware baseball team past the University of Richmond, 9-1, in the final game of a three-game set. Richardson (right) had three hits, five RBI, scored twice and stole three bases in Sunday’s finale.
Richmond (1-5) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. After the first two Spiders of the inning reached base, catcher Hank Coogan’s bunt was thrown away by Blue Hen third baseman Adam Tsakonas, allowing the lead runner Austin Reilly to score the game’s first run.
Delaware (2-1) responded in the top half of the fifth. Kyle Davis led off the inning with a single, followed by a double by Todd Davison that put runners on second and third with no one out. Richardson then singled to drive in both Davis and Davison and give the Hens the lead. Richardson then proceeded to steal second and third base and scored on Bryan Hagerich’s sacrifice fly.
In his next at-bat in the sixth inning, Richardson came to the plate with Ryan Engelhardt on second base and two outs. He tripled to right-centerfield to score Engelhardt, and then scored his second run of the day when Tsakonas followed with a single. He capped his day offensively in the eighth inning when he once again drove home Davis and Davison, who were on third and second again, respectively. After the single, he then stole second base for his third steal of the day. Davis, Davison, Richardson and Engelhardt all scored twice for the Blue Hens. With his second hit of the day, Davison became the 28th player in program history to reach the 200 hit plateau.
Junior college transfer Todd Ozog started on the mound for the Blue Hens. Ozog allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out five in five innings to earn the win in his Delaware debut. Matt Heppner worked three scoreless innings in relief and Billy Harris worked a scoreless ninth to wrap up the win.
The Blue Hens will return to action on Wednesday, March 1, when they take on Saint Joseph’s University in their 2006 home opener. Game time at Bob Hannah Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m.
