NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team scored multiple runs in three seperate innings on its way to a 9-4 victory over Saint Joseph’s University in the Blue Hens home opener on Wednesday at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Kevin Brown allowed one run and struck out four in four innings of work to earn the win for Delaware. Saint Joseph’s starter Chris Prescott took the loss for the Hawks, who fell to 0-7.

The Blue Hens (3-1) jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. Adam Tsakonas and Bryan Hagerich led off with a single and a double, respectively. Two batters later with the bases loaded and one out, Ryan Jablonski (right) lined a single through the middle to score Tsakonas and Hagerich with the game’s first two runs.

Saint Joseph’s responded in the top of the third when second baseman Mike Blahusch led off the inning with a home run to left to cut the Delaware lead in half. In the bottom of the inning, the Hens increased their lead on a two-out single by Brandon Menchaca that plated two runs. Menchaca then doubled in the bottom of the fifth to give the Hens a 5-1 lead.

After striking out two batters in a scoreless fifth inning, pitcher Rob Bergman found himself in a jam in the sixth. He hit leadoff batter Matt Godulsky, followed by two walks, and then allowed a bases-clearing double to Hawks catcher Dustin Onulak that cut the Delaware lead to 5-4.

The Hens roared back in the bottom half of the inning. Jablonski led off with a triple, followed by a double by designated hitter Scott Shockley. Two batters later, Todd Davison homered to left to put the Hens up 8-4. After Tsakonas reached on an error, Hagerich recored the Hen’s second triple of the inning to provide the final margin.

Evan Bowen and Chad Kerfoot combined for four innings of scoreless relief to finish off the win. Menchaca knocked in three runs on the day while Tsakonas scored three times.

The Blue Hens will return to action this weekend when they take on the University of Vermont in a three-game set. Saturday will feature a doubleheader, with the first game a nine-inning contest, followed by a seven inning game two. Sunday’s nine-inning match will wrap up the series.
