NORRISTOWN, PA -- The University of Delaware fell behind by two runs in the fourth inning, but rebounded with 10 runs over the next two innings on its way to a 14-4 non-conference win over Saint Joseph’s in a non-league game on Tuesday.
The Blue Hens (9-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when shortstop Todd Davison led off the inning with a home run to right center. After the Hawks (4-14) came back to take the lead with three runs in their half of the fourth, the Hens took advantage of a passed ball and two Hawk errors to push across three runs and take the lead for good, 4-3.
Delaware then took control of the game in the sixth inning. Brandon Menchaca led off with a walk against new Saint Joseph’s pitcher Chris Prescott. Menchaca then stole second and third base, and remained there until scoring on a wild pitch after Dan Richardson reached on an error. After catcher Ryan Englehardt was hit by a pitch, Kyle Davis was walked by the Hawks second pitcher of the inning, Joel Grimshaw. Freshman Alex Buchholz (right) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and blew the game wide open by launching his first career grand slam over the the right field wall. Davison followed by emulating Menchaca with a walk and two stolen bases before third baseman Adam Tsakonas launched his first home run of the season to cap the seven-run inning. The Hens added a three-run homer by Engelhardt in the ninth to reach their 14-run total.
Rob Bergman got the start for the Hens, and allowed four hits and two runs over 3.1 innings of action. Steve Miklas followed Bergman by allowing two runs over 3.2 innings to earn the win in his Delaware debut. Saint Joseph’s starter Jason Hessler took the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, over five innings.
The Hens will return to action this weekend when they open conference play with a three-game set in Harrisonburg, VA against James Madison University. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with start times of 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
