Ten members of the University of Delaware baseball team competed in collegiate wooden bat leagues this summer. Below is an update on each of their summers.
Todd Davison played in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the 22-19 Cotuit Kettleers. While starting in 40 games and playing all four-infield positions, Davison committed only 6 errors. Offensively, he hit .257, led the team with 17 walks, and was second on the team with 17 runs scored, and third on the team with 17 RBI. Davison will be a senior infielder for the Blue Hens in 2006.
Incoming junior college transfer catcher Ryan Engelhardt played for the Staunton Braves in the Valley League. Engelhardt caught 22 games for the 22-24 Braves and had a .992 fielding percentage. He was second on the team with a .390 on base percentage. Engelhardt will be a junior catcher for the Blue Hens in 2006.
Brian Hagerich, Billy Harris and Mitch Heckert all played for the 22-19 Manchester Silkworms in the New England Collegiate League (NECBL). Hagerich made 34 starts in the outfield and was second on the team with 18 runs scored. Left-handed pitcher Billy Harris made 15 appearances including 8 starts. Harris led all Silkworm pitchers with 48 strikeouts. He finished fourth in the league with 20 batters struck out looking. He was named NECBL Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 26th. Lefthander Mitch Heckert finished with a 6-1 record. His 6 wins led all NECBL pitchers for the summer and set the Silkworms franchise record. Heckert finished 3rd in the league in innings (58 2/3) and 5th in the league with a 1.99 ERA. For his efforts, Heckert was named as the Southern Division’s starting pitcher in the NECBL All-Star Game. Hagerich, Harris and Heckert will all be juniors for the Blue Hens in 2006.
Matt Heppner pitched for the 17-22 Long Island Collegians of the Atlantic Coast Baseball League. In 4 starts, Heppner had a 1-1 record and a 3.60 ERA. Heppner, a right-hander, will be a sophomore pitcher for the Blue Hens in 2006.
Chad Kerfoot pitched for the 2005 AAABA World Series championship Younce’s Orioles of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. At the AAABA World Series, Kerfoot made two starts. In the semi-final game he pitched a complete game shutout. Kerfoot led the 50-17 Orioles in wins and innings. He finished with a 7-3 record, a 1.65 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings pitched. Kerfoot will be a junior right-handed pitcher for the Blue Hens in 2006.
Dan Kozek played outfield and first-base for the Protocall Starz of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League. The Starz finished with a 10-19 record. Kozek will be a junior first-baseman for the Blue Hens in 2006.
Brandon Menchaca played outfield for the 20-22 North Adams Steeplecats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Menchaca started 28 games in the outfield for North Adams. He will be a sophomore for the Blue Hens in 2006.
Adam Tsakonas played third base for the Quakertown Blazers of the Atlantic Coast Baseball League (ACBL). The Blazers finished with a 27-13 record and won the ACBL League championship. Tsakonas finished fifth in the league with a .336 average, fifth in the league with 30 runs scored and had an impressive .415 on-base percentage. Tsakonas will be a sophomore third baseman/ first baseman for the Blue Hens in 2006.
The Blue Hens begin their fall practice and inter-squads scrimmages on September 11th. They open up the 2006 season at the University of Richmond on February 24th.
