NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team hit three home runs and took advantage of being hit by seven pitches on its way to an 18-8 non-league win over Temple University on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Dan Richardson (right) and Todd Davison, the first two hitters in the Delaware lineup, each reached base four times and scored four runs for the Blue Hens, while freshman Alex Buchholz, who started the game on the mound, drove in four runs.

The Blue Hens seemed to have the game in hand, leading 7-1 entering the top of the fifth inning. However, Temple put together a four-run rally against Blue Hen reliever Rob Bergman. The rally was capped when Temple centerfielder Tom Dolan hit his first home run of the season, only the sixth of the year for the Owls, to tie the score at seven.

After going scoreless in the fifth inning, the Hens (17-13) erupted in the bottom of the sixth. Richardson led off by getting hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Buchholz’s single to give the Hens the lead once again. After Bryan Hagerich walked, Brandon Menchaca singled home Buchholz to put the Hens up 9-7. The Hens then scored five more runs before putting another ball in play, courtesy of walks to Bill Merkler and Davison, while Adam Tsakonas, Kyle Davis, Buchholz and Richardson (for the second time in the inning) were all hit by pitches. Hagerich then topped off the big inning with a bases loaded, two-out double that put the Hens up 16-7. In all, Delaware brought 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs on three hits, one error, two walks and five hit batsmen.

For the day, the Blue Hens were hit by seven pitches, including two each for Richardson, Tsakonas and Davis. Davis also hit his first career home run, which put the Hens up 5-2 in the bottom of the second inning.

Senior outfielder Brent Rogers, who made his collegiate pitching debut on Tuesday against Delaware State, pitched three perfect innings in relief to earn his first career victory. Temple’s Eric Lovelace took the loss, falling to 0-1.

The Blue Hens will return to action on Friday when they travel to Hofstra for a three-game weekend set with the Pride.
