NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware scored two runs in four separate innings and sophomore pitcher Matt Heppner (right) worked a complete game two-hitter in leading the University of Delaware baseball team past UMBC, 8-2, on Tuesday afternoon in Newark.

Bryan Hagerich and Adam Tsakonas each had two hits for the Blue Hens, while Hagerich and Alex Buchholz each scored twice.

The Hens (11-10) took control of the game when they scored two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Delaware first scored in the third inning on Ryan Engelhardt?fs two-run home run. The Hens used the long ball again in the fourth when Bryan Hagerich drove his sixth home run of the year over the leftfield wall with one out to put the Hens up 3-0. After adding another run in the fourth, Delaware added two in the fifth when Todd Davison worked a two-out walk and was followed by a home run by freshman infielder Alex Buchholz to give the Hens a 6-0 lead.

Heppner, who made his first start of the season, was outstanding on the mound for Delaware. Working quickly and pounding the outer half of the plate, Heppner kept Retriever hitters off balance all day. He allowed only two hits and struck out eight, with his only blip being a two-run home run by UMBC designated hitter Zach Clark. Heppner allowed only four balls out of the infield on his way to his first career complete game. The game also marked the first complete game of the 2006 season for the Blue Hens. Heppner picked up his second win of the season for the Hens, while UMBC (8-11) starter Eddie Bach took the loss to drop to 1-3.

The Blue Hens return to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Towson for the first game of a three game conference set. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
