WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The College of WIlliam & Mary baseball team took advantage of four Delaware errors by scoring six unearned runs on its way to an 11-3 win over the University of Delaware on Friday evening at Plumeri Park.
The Blue Hens were held without a home run for the first time since an April 9 loss to George Mason. Greg Maliniak had two hits and two RBI for the Tribe, while Brandon Menchaca reached base four times for the Hens.
The Tribe (15-26, 7-17 CAA) scored five runs on only two hits in two innings off of Delaware starter Mike McGuire. In the first leadoff man Jeff Lunardi worked a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by Mike Sheridan, who was safe on an error by McGuire.
Greg Sexton then dropped down a bunt that advanced Lunardi and Sheridan, and after Lunardi scored on a wild pitch, left fielder Greg Maliniak tripled deep to centerfield and later scored on another bunt by Joe Mante. McGuire was removed after hitting consecutive batters with one out in the second, and both runners came around to score.
The Blue Hens (25-15, 9-10 CAA) got on the board in the top of the fifth. After getting only two hits in the first four innings, Delaware strung together two hits and a walk to load the bases with two outs for Ryan Jablonski. Jablonski stroked a line drive single to centerfield that scored two runs before Tribe centerfielder Sean Grieve threw behind Menchaca to get him rounding second base.
The Blue Hens squandered several opportunities to score in the middle innings, none more bizarre than in the top of the sixth. With runners on first and second and two outs, shortstop Todd Davison took a ball up for ball three. Thinking it was ball four, Davison began running to first base. When Kyle Davis, who had been on first, started jogging to second, Tribe catcher Joe Mante threw down to the first baseman Sheridan, who tagged Davis for the third out.
Chad Kerfoot (above) was outstanding in relief for the Blue Hens, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven while pitching 6.2 innings after replacing McGuire in the second. Sean Soskono pitched seven innings to pick up the win for the Tribe, while McGuire took the loss for the Hens to fall to 2-2.
In the fifth inning Sheridan grounded out to Davison, giving Davison his 604th career assist, breaking a record held by Joe Shockley. Davison recently broke Shockley's record for consecutive games played, and also moved into first place on the career at-bats list.
The Blue Hens and the Tribe will resume their series at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg.
