NEWARK, DE -- Ryan Jablonski set a new career-high with four hits and the quartet of Billy Harris, Brad Miller, Matt Heppner and David Slovak did not allow an earned run as the University of Delaware baseball team posted a 7-1 win over Delaware State on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Alex Buchholz and Kyle Davis each had three hits for the Hens, while Slovak (right) allowed one hit and struck out four in two innings on the mound.

The Hens (5-13) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on the corners and two outs, Scott Shockley’s single to center brought home Jablonski with the first run of the day.

The Hornets tied the game on an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Randy Boyer reached on an error and came around to score on a one-out fielder’s choice by shortstop Justin Bittner.

Delaware took the lead back for good by scoring twice without a hit in the bottom of the fifth. Brandon Menchaca led off with a walk, stole second and scored when Buchholz’ dribbler was thrown away by Hornet pitcher Anthony Gibbons. Buchholz wound up on third and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Shockley to give the Hens a 3-1 lead.

The Hens used a two-out rally to build a three-run lead in the bottom of the sixth. With no one on and two outs, Davis doubled down the line in leftfield and then scored when Jablonski sent his fourth hit of the afternoon back through the box.

Delaware scored three more runs in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead and were not threatened again.

Heppner picked up the win for the Blue Hens, while the starter Gibbons took the loss for the Hornets.

The Hens return to action this weekend when they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in a Colonial Athletic Association series.
