ATLANTA -- The Delaware pitching trio of Brent Gaphardt (right), Chad Kerfoot and David Slovak allowed one run on five hits and struck out eight in holding down the Georgia State offense and leading the University of Delaware baseball team to a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association win on Friday evening in Atlanta.
Scott Shockley and Danny Overcash each had two hits for the Hens, while Ryan Jablonski went 0-3 with a walk to snap an 11-game hitting streak. The Hens have allowed only one run in each of the last two games after not allowing less than four in their first 16 games.
The Panthers (12-15, 2-5 CAA) threatened in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with only one out. The Blue Hen starter Gaphardt then struckout Bradley Logan for the second out and got catcher Aeden McQueary to ground out to end the inning.
The Hens (6-13, 3-4 CAA) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Shockley led off with a single to center, and with one out Ryan Engelhardt reached on an error. Overcash followed with a double to right-center that brought in Shockley, and then Kyle Davis followed with a single to score Engelhardt for the two-run lead.
Georgia State cut the lead in half inthe bottom of the sixth against Kerfoot. Charlie Pelt led off with a double and came around to score on a one-out double by McQueary. Kerfoot then stranded McQueary at third to preserve the one-run Delaware advantage.
In the seventh, Slovak came in for the Hens and slammed the door on the Panthers, allowing only an infield single in three innings for his first save as a Blue Hen.
Gaphardt allowed three hits and struck out six in five innings to earn his second win, while Drew Grant took the loss for Georgia State to fall to 2-2. Gaphardt has still yet to allow a run in 13 innings in the 2007 season.
