ATLANTA -- Chase Childers’ single with the bases loaded and two outs in the tenth inning brought home Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas with the game-winning run in Georgia State’s 9-8 win over the University of Delaware in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers scored six runs in the first and two in the tenth to ruin a gem by senior lefthander Billy Harris (right), who struck out a career-high 11 and allowed one run in 7.2 innings of relief. Bryan Hagerich and Brandon Menchaca each homered for the Hens.
Delaware (6-14, 3-5 CAA) was staked to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Ryan Jablonski led off with a single and Menchaca followed with his second home run of the season. After Alex Buchholz flew out to center, Hagerich hit his team-high fifth homer of the season over the wall in left to put the Hens up three.
Georgia State (13-15, 3-5 CAA) roared back with six runs in the bottom of the first. With two on and one out, catcher Aeden McQueary doubled down the rightfield line for the second GSU run and left runners on second and third. After Childers walked to load the bases, Bradley Logan singled in two more runs. Matt Van Horn followed with a second consecutive two-RBI single that put the Panthers up 6-3.
The Blue Hens scratched their way back to a tie in the top of the third. Menchaca doubled with one out and scored on a single by Hagerich. Buchholz moved to third and Hagerich to second on the throw home, setting up a bizarre play that served to tie the game. Panthers starter Will Palmer uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Buchholz and Hagerich came in to score the tying run when the ball was thrown away by the catcher McQueary.
Billy Harris came in to settle things down on the mound for the Hens and proceeded to strike out five of the first eight batters he faced. Harris’ appearance was his 66th of his career, putting him two behind Scott Rambo for second place in school history.
The Panthers took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and nobody on Van Horn walked and then stole second. Harris then struck out Michael McCree, but McCree reached first on a wild pitch. Eric Suttle then singled home Van Horn for the lead. GSU then loaded the bases, but Harris struck out Luke Gordon to end the inning.
Down one in the top of the ninth, the Hens played small ball to tie the score. Bill Merkler led off with an infield single and pinch-hitter Ryan Cuneo walked. After pitcher Matt Heppner was sent in to run for Cuneo, Kyle Davis’ sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with only one out. Jablonski’s RBI groundout to second tied the score before Menchaca flew out to center with Heppner on third to end the inning.
The Panthers threatened in the ninth loading the bases with two outs, but Harris got pinch-hitter Dusty Bennett to fly out to Menchaca to end the inning.
Delaware took its first lead since the first inning in the top of the tenth. With runners on first and second and two outs, pinch-hitter Ryan Engelhardt stepped to the plate and stroked a single to centerfield that scored Hagerich for a 7-6 lead.
Up one in the tenth, Blue Hen reliever David Slovak hit McCree to lead off the inning. After Suttle flied out to center, Rochon-Salvas walked and Gordon singled to bring in the tying run. After Charlie Pelt was intentionally walked, Slovak struck out McQueary before Childers base hit won it for the Panthers.
Kevin Dooley won the game for the Panthers despite giving up the tying run in the ninnth and the go ahead run in the tenth. Slovak took the loss for the Hens to fall to 1-2.
The Hens and Panthers will wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
