ATLANTA -- The University of Delaware baseball team led 7-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth, but Luke Gordon’s two-out grand slam tied the game and Eric Suttle’s two-out single scored the winning run in the 13th inning to give the Georgia State University baseball team an 8-7, 13 inning victory over the Blue Hens on Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Jablonski (right) had three hits including a home run for the Hens, The game was the longest that Delaware has played this decade.
After Georgia State (14-15, 4-5 CAA) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Hens (6-15, 3-6 CAA) came back with four in the top of the second. The Hens had only three hits in the inning, but took advantage of an error, a hit batter, a sacrifice fly and a balk.
The Hens added two more in the fourth highlighted by Danny Overcash leading off with his first collegiate home run.
Delaware went up 7-3 in the top of the ninth when Jablonski led off the inning with his second home run of the season. In the bottom of the ninth, Delaware reliever Matt Heppner got the first two outs, but two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Gordon, who hit a grand slam to left that tied the score at 7-7.
The Hens best chance to score in extra innings came in the top of the tenth when they loaded the bases with no outs. However, Overcash struck out and Kyle Davis grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Hens threatened again in the top of the 13th when Ryan Engelhardt led off by getting hit by a pitch. Pinch-runner Steve Spiese moved to second on Overcash’s sacrifice bunt. Davis then popped up to second base and after Jablonski was intentionally walked, Brandon Menchaca struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the 13th Heppner again retired the first two batters, but then walked Dusty Bennett, who then moved to second on a wild pitch. Delaware brought in Todd Ozog from the bullpen, but Ozog’s second pitch was hit through the right side by Suttle to score Bennett with the game-winner.
Adam Bowling picked up the win for the Panthers to move to 2-1, while Heppner took the loss to fall to 1-4.
Delaware will return to action when it hosts LaSalle at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
