NEWARK, DE -- The Hofstra University baseball team scored 11 runs with two-outs, including all five of its runs in the fifth inning, on its way to a 16-8 victory over the University of Delaware on Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Four hitters had three hits apiece for the Pride (9-12, 4-5 CAA). Scott Shockley and Adam Tsakonas had three hits for the Hens, while Ryan Jablonski (right) had a home run and three RBI for the Hens (4-12, 2-4 CAA).

The 16 runs were the most allowed by the Blue Hens since an 18-16 loss to Marist on March 10, 2006.

Hofstra loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning. After CAA leading hitter Matt Prokopowicz grounded out for one RBI, the Hens appeared to be out of the inning when Dion Pouncil hit a fly ball to leftfield. However, Delaware leftfielder Bryan Hagerich lost the ball in the sun and two more runs were able to come home.

Delaware cut the lead to one run with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. After Alex Buchholz’ two-out double, Prokopowicz couldn’t handle Hagerich’s hot shot to third and Buchholz came home with the first Delaware run. Shockley followed with a double that brought home Hagerich to draw the Hens back to 3-2.

Hofstra scored four more in the top of the second to chase Delaware starter Matt Heppner from the game. The Pride scored six runs without the benefit of an extra base hit, parlaying four singles, a hit batter, two wild pitches and two Delaware errors into a 9-2 lead.

Delaware got two back in the bottom of the second when Jablonski hit his first home run of the season with Tsakonas aboard to cut the deficit to 9-4. Delaware then left two runners on base in both the third and fourth innings.

Hofstra added five with a two-out rally in the fifth. After retiring the first two batters, Blue Hen reliever Brad Miller hit nine hitter Tom Legregni, then allowed a single to Mentrasti, a double to Panzarella, a walk to Campana then hit Sarno and allowed a two-RBI single to Prokopowicz and another RBI single by Pouncil.

The Hens scored once and loaded the bases with no one out in the fifth, however Hofstra reliever John Fuhrman came in and struck out Dan Richardson and Jablonski before getting Brandon Menchaca to fly out to end the inning and saddle the Hens with seven runners left on base through the third, fourth and fifth innings.

The Hens scored three times in the seventh but Hofstra answered right back with two in the top of the eighth and the Hens did not threaten again.

Heppner started and took the loss for the Hens to fall to 0-3, while Fuhrman picked up his second win of the weekend for the Pride to move to 2-0.

The Hens will return to action at home against Temple and Delaware State before travelling to Atlanta to take on Georgia State this Friday to Sunday.
