NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore designated hitter Scott Shockley had a career-high four hits and scored three runs in leading the University of Delaware baseball team to a 12-9 non-conference win over La Salle on Tuesday afternoon.
Every member of the Delaware starting lineup had at least one hit. Shockley (right) and Bryan Hagerich each scored three times.
LaSalle (9-14) took the lead on two unearned runs in the second inning. RJ Hollinshead reached on an error, and after a two-out walk to nine-hitter Brian Meagher, freshman John Malloy extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a double to right center that scored both Hollinshead and Meagher.
Delaware (7-15) took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Hagerich led off with a walk and Shockley followed with a single up the middle. Adam Tsakonas then doubled to deep center to bring in both Hagerich and Shockley to tie the game. Kyle Davis’ one-out sacrifice fly brought home Tsakonas to give the Hens a 3-2 lead.
LaSalle took their two-run lead back in the top of the third inning, scoring three times, including two unearned runs. Delaware tied the game in the bottom of the inning, when Brandon Menchaca and Hagerich each hit solo home runs.
The Explorers retook the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on a two-out single by George Papuchis to take a 7-5 lead.
The Hens took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when their first six hitters recorded base hits, bringing in five runs before the first out was recorded and chasing Explorer reliever John DiPiero from the game. They would add one each in the sixth and seventh innings to build a 12-8 lead that was never seriously threatened.
Kevin Brown struck out three in 3.2 innings of relief to pick up his first win, while DiPiero took the loss for the Explorers. David Slovak pitched three innings for his second save.
The Hens return to action tomorrow afternoon with a road game at Rider.
