NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team will hold its first scrimmage of 2007 on September 20 at 3 p.m., announced head coach Jim Sherman.
The Blue Hens open team workouts on September 17 followed by a 14-game scrimmage schedule.
Delaware will cap off its fall with a Blue/Grey World Series on Oct. 22, 23, 24, 29, and 30. The tournament is a best-of-three series. All game times for the event are set at 3 p.m.
In 2007, Delaware finished tied for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association during the regular season and finished as the runner-up during the CAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens are led by junior Alex Buchholz (at right), who was honored as a third team Pingbaseball.com All-American in 2007. Selected as Delaware’s Outstanding Offensive Player last season, he topped the Hens with a .387 batting average and 63 runs batted in.
Mike McGuire, a 46th round selection of the Cincinnati Reds in the Major League Baseball draft last year, also returns for his senior season. One of Delaware’s top returning pitchers, he was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Tournament team last year after firing 8 1/3 innings of no-hit ball in the semifinals against Old Dominion.
Closer David Slovak and infielder Adam Tsakonas are also expected to provide big contributions this season.
