NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Kyle Davis came off the Delaware bench with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning and delivered a base hit into left centerfield to score Adam Tsakonas and give the University of Delaware baseball team a 9-8 non-conference win over Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday afternoon at chilly Bob Hannah Stadium.
Ryan Jablonski, Bryan Hagerich, Scott Shockley and Tsakonas all had two hits for the Hens, while Alex Buchholz went 0-5 to end his hitting streak at 18 games.
Saint Joseph’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Taking advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen, the Hawks scored their three runs on only two hits, highlighted by a two-out double down the right field line by Mike Blausch that brought in two runs.
Delaware tied the game in the bottom half of the third when Hagerich launced his fourth home run of the season deep over the fence in leftfield with Jablonski scoring ahead of him.
The Hawks reclaimed the lead with a sacrifice fly in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Hawks added another run in the top of the fifth on a two-out single by Kenny Pustizzi.
The Hens manufactured a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Brandon Menchaca walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hagerich.
Ben Wendle homered in the top of the sixth to put the Hawks up 7-4, and then Ryan Engelhardt’s single brought Scott Shockley home to make it 7-5 where the score remained heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Saint Joseph’s brought in Chris Prescott from the bullpen. Prescott’s first pitch to Menchaca was wild in the dirt and brought home Shockley to make the score 7-6. Menchaca then ripped a triple off the top of the wall in rightfield, scoring Danny Overcash and Jablonski and giving the Hens an 8-7 lead.
In the top half of the ninth inning, Delaware reliever David Slovak walked leadoff hitter Jeremy Jakubowski and then allowed singles to Drew Smith and Gentile to load the bases with no outs. Slovak then got Mike Blausch to tap into a 1-2-3 double play that left runners at second and third with two outs. After Pustizzi was walked intentionally, Hawk pinch-hitter Dewey Oriente chopped a ball back through the middle that tied the game at 8-8 and left the bases loaded. Slovak then struck out Adriano Petrutz to retire the side.
In the Blue Hen ninth, Tsakonas singled with one out and after Ryan Reed struck out, Shockley and Bill Merkler drew back to back walks to load the bases with two outs for Davis. Davis, who remained bundled up in the dugout until being called upon to pinch-hit, then laced the game-winner into the gap in left center.
Slovak picked up his first win for the Hens to move to 1-1, while Prescott took the loss for the Hawks to fall to 0-3.
The Hens return to action against Hofstra on Friday at 3 p.m. in the first game of a Colonial Athletic Association series at Bob Hannah Stadium.
