NEWARK, DE -- A ninth-inning rally ended with the tying run on third base as the Temple University baseball team squeaked out a 5-4 non-conference win over the University of Delaware on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Dan Richardson (at right) and Bryan Hagerich each had two hits for the Hens (2-10), and Alex Buchholz had one hit to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.
Temple (5-10) jumped out to a lead in the top of the first inning. With two on and one out, Shawn Barksdale’s single through the middle brought home the first two runs of the day.
The Hens got two runners on base in four of the first five innings, but were unable to push a run across against Temple starter Tom Dolan and his replacements Matt Mongiardini and Mike Click.
Temple added two runs in the top of the eighth when their first four batters reached base. Barksdale’s RBI single made the game 3-0, and Jamie Abercrombie’s RBI fielder’s choice put the Owls up by four. The Owls added an unearned run in the top of the ninth to go up 5-0, setting the stage for the bottom half.
Adam Tsakonas and Richardson started off the inning with back to back hits and advanced on a bunt by Kyle Davis. After Ryan Jablonski’s walk loaded the bases, Brandon Menchaca’s RBI groundout got the Hens on the board. Buchholz followed with a single to right that brought in Richardson and Jablonski. Bryan Hagerich’s single scored Buchholz, and after Bill Merkler reached on an error that moved Hagerich to third, Temple pitcher Matt Blackburn got Ryan Engelhardt to ground out to second to end the game.
Mongiardini got the win for Temple while Brad Miller took the loss for the Hens.
The Hens return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Saint Joseph’s at 3 p.m.
