NEWARK, DE -- Scott Peddicord’s home run with two on and one out in the eighth inning gave the UMBC baseall team a 9-8 victory over the University of Delaware on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Alex Buchholz (right) and Bryan Hagerich each had a a home run and three hits for the Hens (1-9), while Tom Meaney had four hits for the Retrievers (4-6).
Delaware took the lead in the bottom of the first when Buchholz launched his second home run of the season over the left-centerfield fence to give the Hens a 1-0 lead.
The teams traded runs in the fourth inning, and then UMBC took its first lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. The Hens answered with three of their own in the bottom half, highlighted by a triple by Hagerich, to regain the lead, 5-3.
The Retrievers tied the game up at 5-5 in the top of the sixth when pinch-hitter Rick Phillips sent a drive over the wall in in left with one man on. UMBC then added one more to take a 6-5 lead in the top half of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh the Hens got their first two runners on base and with one out Hagerich blasted his third home run in four games to put Delaware up 8-5.
However, the Retrievers came back with three more runs in the top of the eighth on Peddicord’s three-run homer. After Peddicord’s home run, the Hens were unable to score against UMBC reliever Matt Buchholz, who allowed only one hit (to his brother Alex) in two innings to pick up his first save.
Tom Schlein picked up the win for the Retrievers to move to 1-0, while David Slovak took the loss for the Hens to fall to 0-1.
The Blue Hens return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Wilmington College at 3 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
